Affordable Construction Theme Birthday Party for Toddlers
Here’s how we threw our son a beautiful affordable construction theme birthday party without spending a fortune.
Originally we had a Disney World trip planned and booked for his second birthday but decided to cancel about a month before due to the rise in cases. With only a month left to put together…anything, I hopped on Amazon.
He’s our only winter baby and to top that we were still practicing social distancing. We wanted him to have a great time but with him being so young and our other circumstances, we didn’t want to spend too much.
Some items were left over or extra from other parties so money was saved there. A few years back our daughter had an emoji birthday party so the roll of yellow balloon string and black tablecloth (unopened) were just sitting in our party bin waiting to be used.
The party was for close family which is only a total of 11 people (5 in our household). To save money I made the invitations on Picmonkey.com for free.

Dollar Tree Party Favors and Decor
For this construction theme birthday party items can be found for as little as $1. Dollar Tree carries mini dump trucks and tractor cars that fit into the decor perfectly. Dollar Tree is a must when shopping for party items. You can find party streamers, plates, cutlery, balloons and more all in a variety of colors.
The mini construction trucks were used as table decor and cake toppers. In the end they all became his play toys so there was no waste. We took black and yellow streamers, twisted them together and hung them from the ceiling. It was a simple and easy design that only costs us $2.
Party Tip:
When throwing themed parties, purchase color coordinating decor such as balloons, streamers and plates from Dollar Tree. Add in a few themed items like banners, signs and balloons to help it all come together. For example, instead of purchasing construction plates for maybe $5 a pack get 2 packs of yellow plates for $1 each. In doing this, you spend less money and if there are leftovers they can be put away and used for another party.
Construction Themed Party Decor
I only ordered FIVE PACKAGES. The cone candles are not a must. If you can find them smaller somewhere else, go for it. Amazon has some pretty affordable decor too. My Amazon items are linked below.

Amazon Finds:
- Construction Backdrop
- Party Kit 51 pieces (Construction Theme)
- Construction Party Hats (The hats we ordered are no longer available. Here’s a similar brand. They only fit toddlers)
- Hazard Floor Tape (Love This & it’s only $3!)
- Cone Candles ( These candles are huge!)
THE CAKE- Construction Theme
First, we grabbed a box of Duncan Hines chocolate cake, chocolate frosting and Oreos from Target. Make the cake according to the box instructions. Allow the cake to cool before adding frosting.
Next, remove the cream filling from the Oreos and threw them in the food processor until they resembled dirt.
Then, draw the number 2 on cardstock paper and cut it out.
Lastly, place it on the cake after it was frosted and sprinkled oreos crumbs all over the cake.
Entertainment
Playing with the mini dump trucks and tractor trucks we picked up from Dollar Tree kept them busy. We considered buying sand from our local hardware store but the weather was below freezing so we played Disney movies. Filling the construction hats with sand and throwing in some mini trucks would be fun.
All in all it was a very affordable birthday party that even the adults enjoyed.
