DIY Pegboard Shelves
You can say I’m a bit obsessed with pegboards. Not just DIY pegboards shelves but pretty much any pegboard. The IKEA skadis pegboard was one of my first purchases for my office makeover and the diy pegboards were not far behind.
How to Make DIY Pegboard Shelves-Video
Here’s what you’ll need
- Power Drill
- Forstner drill bit (mine was 3/4 inch)
- 3/4 inch dowels
- plywood
- 220 grit sandpaper
- (2) 1x4x8 (Shelves)
- Hand saw
- paint or stain (optional)
So far I’ve made about 3 large pegboards. All of them only required one power tool! Local hardware stores can cut your plywood and 1×4’s down to size which takes away a power tool and makes the process so much easier. One 1×4 is for your shelves and the other will be used as wall support for the pegboard. The support 1×4 should be cut into 2 equal pieces and be shorter than the width of your plywood.
Step 1
After your plywood has been cut to your desired size, use a large ruler to create a pattern for your holes. For example, mark dots 6 inches apart horizontally and vertically across the entire board. Next, place a star on the dots that you plan to drill holes to place your pegs (dowels). Remember to stagger the holes in order to get the most space out of your pegboard.
Step 2
Attach the forstner bit to your drill. (Tip: If you use a 3/4 inch bit you should also use 3/4 inch dowels. They will fit into the holes perfectly once you give the dowels a light sand). Drill holes where you marked the stars.
Step 3
Optional
Paint or stain plywood. I have done both and prefer to paint or stain at this point so the wood has time to dry while I’m working on the pegs.
Step 4
Use the hand saw to cut your dowels down to size. They should be about an inch shorter than the width of your shelves. Sand the end of the dowel that needs to fit into the hole.
Step 5
Attach the two equal pieces of 1×4 to your wall making sure they are secured in studs or have the appropriate wall anchors. Wall anchors should be able to hold more than the projected weight that will be placed on the pegboard. Once the support pieces are properly installed, attach the pegboard to the support using screws.
Step 5
Lastly, arrange your pegs and shelves how you would like them and style your pegboard.
