Formal Dining Room Makeover

 Dining Room Makeover

DIY Dining Room Makeover

This is one of my favorite makeovers so far. I was contacted by a couple that happened to attended the same school as me and my husband. They had been in their home for a few years but wanted to start making it their own. One of the first rooms you see when you walk through the door is their formal dining room so they wanted to give it a little more character. My first thought was to create a moulding accent wall and paint it Whisper White.

This dining room makeover may not seem like a drastic transformation at first but take a look at the before below.

Dining Room Sketch On a Budget

I love starting most of my projects off with a sketch. Sketching helps create a visual of what’s in my mind for my clients. I have sketched on paper in the past but since receiving my iPad Pro, it has been a serious level up! I’m still working on dimensions and scale but this is what I had in mind after speaking with the client and exchanging Pinterest inspiration.

Moulding Accent Wall Sketch

Moulding Accent Wall

The rectangles on the wall were created using moulding/ trim that I grabbed at my local hardware store. We used a miter saw to create 45 degree cuts on each piece. Mitering the cuts allowed the trim to fit next to each other without seams or cracks.Moulding to create accent wall

We used wood filled on the inevitable cracks and caulked the gaps between the wall and trim. Once the caulk was dry and the filler was sanded we applied two coats of Whisper White paint.

The accent wall took the most time. Measuring the distance between each rectangle to ensure they were consistent throughout the design was very important. Random rectangles would make a nice design for some spaces but with this being their formal dining room, it was crucial to have them cohesive.

After the Accent Wall

Moving on from the accent wall, we painted the other 3 walls Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams. It’s amazing what changing paint colors will really do! The room went from having a yellow/ brown tint to being bright and cool.

To open the space up even more, I added two mirrors in the outside frames.  We put tall faux trees directly across from the mirrors.

Rug shopping was a bit of a struggle because we were looking for a specific style and color in a short amount of time. I love this rug we picked up from Ikea but I wish it was slightly longer.

The old chandelier was replaced with a sleek new black one from Amazon. I also replaced the warm light bulbs with daylight bulbs.

The moulding made such a huge impact on the wall. I don’t think it would have looked this amazing without it! Follow me on TikTok @busywithd to see more transformations!
