Keeping Kids Cool in the Summer
Summer means free time for the kids and plenty of outdoor fun. There’s nothing like playing at the park for hours or bike rides in the neighborhood but what about those brutally hot summer days? Finding things to keep your kids entertained and safe from the heat during the summer months can be a challenge.
Here in Texas, our summer days can reach triple digit degrees so sometimes outdoor play is just not an option. Here are 5 activities that are great at keeping kids cool in the summer.
5 Cool Summer Activities
1. Indoor Water Parks
Indoor water parks can provide that much needed break from the sun while still offering plenty of fun for everyone.
One indoor water park we enjoy is Great Wolf Lodge. Not only is it a water park but it is a resort that has standard, themed and premium suites. Although we only live about 30 minutes away from their Texas location we chose a themed suite that housed a fun bunk room for the kids with a queen size bed and a sleeper sofa.
We spent hours at the water park enjoying the crooked creek which is their 3 ft deep lazy river. The Cub Paw Pool was my sons’ absolute favorite. It’s a water play area with slides and sprays that are just right for toddlers. Click here to book a suite at a Great Wolf Lodge near you or enjoy a day pass to the park.
2. Trampoline with Water Hose
Have a trampoline? Add a trampoline sprinkler! They are very inexpensive but create hours of fun. We love this one from Amazon! Simply attach it to your trampoline per directions on the package and add the water hose. The kids are cooling off while having a great time jumping. Playing in sprinklers is not just for kids, it’s an activity for the whole family.
If you don’t have a trampoline, grab a pool noodle and poke holes in it. Attach a water hose and lay it in the yard. You’ve now created your own sprinkler that the kids can run through!
3. Make Popsicles
Recipes are endless when it comes to making popsicles. It is a super easy activity for the kids to participate in and keeps them entertained! Eat them indoors after outside play or have them during outside play!
Try adding fruit and even a little mint to a few of them. Pinterest has a tons of popsicle ideas!
4. Slip and Slide
Slip and slides are classic backyard water toys. Outdoor play before the sun is at its peak is the perfect time to break out the water toys! We’ve used a slip and slide and an inflatable pool and the kids loved it!
Please use proper precautions when allowing children to play with slip and slides as they can cause serious injuries.
5. Water Balloons
Another summer classic game is water balloon toss. Water balloons can be incorporated into many outdoor games like hide and seek or simon says. You could also just throw them at each other until the bucket is empty! There are new tools on the market that allow you to fill multiple balloons at a time saving you time and frustration.
