Easiest Way to Paint French Doors

My office makeover has officially started and the first task on the list is “Paint French Doors”. I have beautiful french doors that lead into my office. They’re one of the first things you see when you walk into our home. While the original color was very nice and cohesive with my home, I wanted the doors to “say” something. Something cool but bold. Paint! Painting french doors?

I’ve wanted a color change for quite some time but the task of painting French doors has always seemed so daunting. The tedious taping, the time, I just wasn’t looking forward to that. On the other hand, this cream/ white paint that our builder chose just had to go!

Painting French doors

The traditional way involves hours of taping that may still result in scraping paint off glass.

Each door has 10 window panes and the frames between each pane can not be removed. To cut out hours of taping I used Jasco® Mask & Peel™ Liquid Masking Tape & Primer that I picked up from Walmart. It gave the doors a clean and professional look. Here’s how I did it.

How to Paint French Doors

Preparation is key!

You want to start by lightly sanding the doors. This provides a rough texture to the surface and allows paint to adhere to the doors. Skipping this step will likely cause the paint to peel where the door is most frequently touched.

Once the doors have been sanded evenly use a damp cloth or shirt to wipe off any dust.

Clean windows and apply a thick coat of Jasco® Mask & Peel™ Liquid Masking Tape & Primer to the glass and edge of trim. What’s great is that this liquid masking tape is a primer also! You’ll know it’s dry when it changes from white to clear, which takes about 30 minutes.

Now we’re on to painting.

Apply an even coat of paint to the doors. Any accidental paint that gets on the mirror peels right off with the mask so no stressing was involved! Add a second coat of paint if needed after the first is completely dry. Once the paint was dry I replaced the original hardware and handles. I may change or paint them at a later date but for now they work.

Using a razor, I scored a line around each window pane and peeled off the mask. The time I saved by cutting out tape and using Jasco® Mask & Peel™ Liquid Masking Tape & Primer was unbelievable! I plan to use it to repaint a wooden mirror I made a few months ago. Be sure to grab yours from Walmart for your next project.

Mask Peel

With “Paint French Doors” crossed off my checklist for my office makeover, I’m moving on to the next. I’m excited to share the other cool ideas I have planned!
