5 Items That Will Make Your Outer Space Themed Birthday Party Amazing
Our son has completed another trip around the sun! We were so excited to plan his third birthday but wanted to keep a few things in mind. Kai’s birthday is in February…in Texas. The weather is a bit unpredictable so for now we stick to indoor at home parties. The day he was born it was warm and sunny. For his first birthday it was rainy and about 60 degrees. For his second birthday, we had a record breaking winter snow storm. With us knowing we would mostly celebrate his birthday at home, we decided to go all out with decor but avoid buying expensive unnecessary items. Here’s how we threw our son an amazing outer space themed birthday party without spending a ton of money.

3 Year Old Space Party Ideas
If done correctly, themed parties can look like they cost a fortune when they really didn’t. I mentioned a few tips in my Throw a Cheap but Amazing Construction Theme Birthday Party for Toddlers blog post. It can be very tempting to purchase items you come across that match your themed party perfectly. Focus on buying just a few themed items (preferably those that come in kits) and color coordinate your other decor to match. For example, you’re throwing a Luau party and you find themed tablecloths, cups, plates and leis that are all sold separately. Rather than grabbing all of it and heading to the register, just purchase the leis and use solid color tablecloths, cups and plates that still match the decor.
For smaller parties you can even scale back on the type of snacks you offer. Skip the prepackaged juice and chips and go for the value or party size items instead. Most of the time food and drinks are out on display so many people won’t notice at all and so what if they do.
Space Themed Birthday Party DIY Decor
For about $30 I made the mosaic #3 using an Etsy template and foam boards. We filled it with small balloons that fit the decor colors. We also made Kai’s NASA shirt using our Cricut machine.
To create the DIY backdrop we used leftover items from a few of the kits we linked above. The blue planet backdrop is a tablecloth that was included in the Outer Space Backdrop and Balloon Arch. We simply used thumbtacks to attach it to the wall. Next, we created a balloon arch with the leftover balloons from two kits and placed the DIY mosaic 3 underneath.
Normally, I would not buy themed birthday plates. It is a lot cheaper to grab the $1 plates from Dollar Tree or Walmart but we came across some rocket plates on Amazon that we could not pass up. I was not sure how to DIY rocket plates to where they could hold food so we were ok with splurging a little.
The party was a success and we did not go over budget! I enjoy throwing themed parties so I’m happy to share any tips and tricks I’ve learned. Feel free to comment your thoughts or questions below! I’m all open if you have additional tips and hacks.
