This was a project for a client. She wanted to add a bit more character to her home office. She is the first client that was completely comfortable with going with a black wall. To start, we took measurements of the wall a few weeks prior to starting.
With the measurements in mind, we sketched up a few designs and she chose her favorite. Sketching your design is completely optional but doing so can give you a place to start especially if you’re not working in your own space. If you’re not big on sketching, you can use tape to map out your design on the wall. Here’s an example of the tape method.
When it was time to begin, we started by securing a piece of trim to the top of the baseboards. This allows the 1×2’s to sit flush against the wall and sit flat without looking as though it’s hanging off the wall. Before adding anything else to the wall, we located all the studs and marked them with a pencil.
Next we framed the wall with 1×2’s. Secure them with 2 inch brad nails along the bottom, top and sides. From there, you can cut your 1×2’s to the angle and height you need them for your design. We like to start with the longest piece in the design. For us, that’s usually in the middle. Then we work from left to right, matching the wood to the sketch or the tape we placed on the wall.
Finishing Touches
The hardest part is done. Once the design is up, we use wood filler to fill all the nail holes and paintable caulk to seal the gaps between the wood and wall. Allow the wood filler to dry for about an hour. The paintable caulk should dry in about 30 min. Here’s a handy tool we love to use when caulking. It helps keep our hands clean…well as clean as they can be when caulking. When everything is dry, sand down the wood filler until it is smooth and feels seamless across the wood. Leaving the wood filler chunky or rough will highlight seams and imperfections once the design is painted.
Next, use a microfiber cloth to wipe away any dust from sanding or cutting wood. At this point you’re ready to paint. You can hand roll or use a paint sprayer to apply paint. If you’re using a sprayer, take the proper precautions when prepping the wall for paint. Use tape and tarps to close off areas you wish to prevent paint from reaching. Allow the first coat to dry and apply an additional coat if needed. After some touch ups here and there your new accent wall is complete.
