Here’s how to create a beginner friendly wood accent wall. There are no angle cuts with an easy to repeat design. Follow these steps to get a stunning iron ore accent wall that is sure to turn heads.
While we have provided many tips on how to complete an accent wall, this may be the easiest one yet.
Vertical Board Accent Wall
First and foremost you want to map out your design on the wall. TIP: Avoid using pens and markers for this as they tend to show up through paint sometimes. With this design, the most “difficult” part is deciding the amount of space you would like between each set of wood. Once you have that you can measure the width of the wall and divide it in half. Then divide the half by the width of the design.
Next, grab your tools. A list of what we used is below. For this step you’ll need to locate the studs in the wall as well as nail the 1×3 and 1×2 boards in the wall using 2 inch brad nails. Secure a 1×4 (or size of your choosing) along the top and bottom of the wall with the nailer. To create the space between the two boards, we placed a spare 1×2 board on wall (on the 3/4 inch side) next to a mounted 1×3. Then we added an additional 1×2 flush with the spare and nailed it in the studs. Once the second 1×2 has been secured to the wall remove the spacer to reveal the gap. You can repeat this process for the entire wall for an accurate and evenly spaced design.
Tools/Items You May Need
- Nailer
- 2 inch nails
- Stud Finder
- Caulk
- Caulking Tool
- Leveler
- Wood Filler
- 220 Sand Block
Now that the boards have all been added to the wall you can seal the gaps on the side with paintable caulk. This gives the wall a clean built in look. This can be a tedious step that’s tempting to skip but the results are worth the time it takes. While the caulk is drying, apply wood filler to the holes and sand using 220 grit sanding block/sponge when it dries.
To finish, wipe the wall with a damp microfiber towel to remove dust from sanding and tape the joining walls/ceiling. Using a roller or a paint sprayer, apply your choice of color. After at least 2 coats you should be left with a seamless accent wall.
